Zheng Yan’s Masking Death: Funerary Art of Medieval China is an outstanding example in this respect. This book proposes a more complete, detail and in-depth study of funeral materials, and places the tombs in the bigger historical and cultural background to understand the various internal elements and the various outside connections. This exploration and perfection of research method have broken through the traditional framework for writing art history and provided us with a new perspective to observe, comb through and integrate again the ancient Chinese funeral art. Consequently, one can get in touch with an art history that belongs to all humans. Art history should no longer be regarded as a disciplinary history. Rather, it should become a cultural history of better universal understanding.
