test is a typical form of integrative test which is characterized by a global view of language proficiency — an underlying language competence or “grammar of expectancy”. In the cloze test, the test takers are asked to fill in the blanks which are created by fixed ration deletion or ration deletion of word in the passage to measure their general language proficiency. Only the test taker is able to form an internal representation of the text and elicits the meaning of the missing words with the help of the whole context, he or she can fill the appropriate words in the blanks or select the right option. When the test-taker is figuring out the missing word, his mind is going through a process of sampling, predicating, testing, and confirming the appropriate word choice. Cloze test is a good indicator of the general language proficiency of the test-takers (Heaton, 2000). Usually, the test-taker who can get good marks in a cloze test will often perform well in other types of test, such as listening, reading and writing. Moreover, it is as reliable as the objective scoring of discrete-point testing, so it becomes very popular in English language tests nowadays.
Classification of Cloze Tests
Cloze tests can be classified into the following categories according to the fill-in-blank method.
MC cloze (Li, 1997; Alderson, 2000)
MC cloze test is a subtype of modified cloze test arranged in the format of multiple-choice questions. That is to say, for each blank in the passage, several alternatives are provided for the test-takers to choose from to restore the missing word. All alternatives should be semantically and syntactically appropriate in the sentence containing the blank; however, there should be only one choice appropriate within the context. Therefore, the student is required to select the appropriate missing word by integrating meaning from a number of sentences in the context.
