θ- ( ) θ- 1/2 ≤ θ ≤ 1 1/2 θ ≤ 1 θ- θ- 1/2 ≤ θ ≤ 1 θ? θ? Abstract Functional differential equations (FDEs) arise widely in the fields of con- trol theory, physics, biology, medicine, chemistry, economics and so on. It is meaningful to investigate the theory and application of numerical methods for FDEs. In recent 30 years, the theory of computational methods for FDEs has been widely discussed by many authors and a great deal of results have been found. Functional differential and functional equations (FDFEs) are a class of hybrid systems that are more complex than that of FDEs. In particular, func- tional differential equations of neutral type can be transformed into FDFEs. The numerical stability analysis of neutral functional differential equations has been studied extensively in recent years. As for the systems of FDFEs, the asymptotic stability of numerical methods for linear FDFEs has been discussed by several authors. However, little attention has been focused on the nonlin- ear systems of FDFEs. For these reasons, the present paper is devoted to the stability analysis of numerical methods for nonlinear FDFEs. The main results obtained are as follows. One-leg θ?methods are adapted for solving a class of nonlinear FDFEs. In is proven that one-leg θ?methods are numerically stable for 1/2 ≤ θ ≤ 1 and asymptotically stable for 1/2 θ ≤ 1 under the suitable conditions. Numerical tests are given to confirm the theoretical results. Linear θ?methods are adapted for solving a class of nonlinear FDFEs. In is proven that linear θ?methods are asymptotically stable for 1/2 ≤ θ ≤ 1 under the suitable conditions. Numerical tests are given to illustrate the theoretical results.
