The thesis has finally be completed after a long period of research consisting of choosing topic, designing questionnaire, conducing research, writing and modification.
My deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to Professor Xu Qiang, my supervisor. So fortunate am I to have him as my supervisor when I am pursuing my postgraduate degree in SHISU. Without his patient encouragement and instruction, this thesis could never be completed. It is his insightful guidance and criticism that enlighten me of choosing the topic and conducting the research. In addition, the help and guidance from other teachers are deeply appreciated in that they inspire me to strive for excellence when it comes to research.

Abstract
English test and English teaching are inseparable parts during the process of teaching, and the influence from test on language teaching and learning is commonly described as “washback”. Since 1993, when Alderson and Wall put forward ‘Washback Hypotheses’, the influence of tests on the teaching and learning has drawn increasing attention from language testing researchers. An enlarging number of empirical studies on the washback effects of language testing, especially of high-stake testing, have been conducted to further verify and enrich the theories and hypotheses related to washback.
