The Lesson Plan Course: English Reading Grade: Second-year English majors Teacher: School of Foreign Languages, Yangzhou Unit 1 Language Testing Teaching Materials: Textbook: Reading Course, Book 4, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press Lecture notes prepared by the teacher Related supplementary reading materials Teaching Schedule: 2 periods Teaching Objectives: Enable the students to Comprehend the main idea of the text; Perceive the overall organization/ structure of the text; Understand and paraphrase some key sentences; Grasp the theme of the text Class Activities The teacher’s instruction The students’ reading practice The students’ group discussion Writing Teaching Procedures Introduction The teacher begins the lesson To introduce the topic of language testing and briefly comment on the relationship between language testing and language learning. To check the students’ reading comprehension in Section B (They are required to preview this part before the class) The students are ready to define language testing based on what they have read. The teacher helps the students to differentiate between discrete tests and integrative tests. Fast Reading Ask the students to finish reading the four passages in Section C. Discuss with the students such testing forms as true/false questions, multiple-choice questions and essay test. Types of test (Section A) Guide the students to do the “word pretest” and explain some words like remedial, lift, attainment, prospective and arbitrary. Remedial: helping Life: encouragement Attainment: accomplishment Prospective: expected Arbitrary: based on chance or personal opinion Set a time limit for the students to finish reading Section A and doing the reading comprehension questions on page 4. Explain the four types of tests: placement test, diagnostic test, achievement test and proficiency test. Ask the students to define the roles that each of the tests plays in learning.
