Any observant person has noticed that a wild animal will allow a man or other potential enemy to approach only up to a given dis tance befo re it flee s. “Flight distances the te rms used for this in terspecies spacing. As a general rule,t here is a positive r elationshi p between the size o f an animal and its flight dis tance—the larger the animal, t he greater the dista nee it must keep bet ween itsel f and the enemy. An antelope w ill flee w hen the en emy is as much as fi ve hundred yards away. The wal I lizard’s flight di stance,on the other hand is a bout six f eet. Flight is the b asic means of surviv al for mob ile creatu res.

to stalk the man.

Social animals need to stay in touch with each other. Loss of contact with the group can be fatal for a variety of reasons including exposure to enemies.Social di stance is not simply the dista nee at which an animal will lose contact with his group—that is,the d istance at which it can no Ion ger see, h ear,or sm ell the gr oup—it is rather a p sychologic al distance, one at which the animal app arently be gins to feel anxious when he e xceeds its limits. We can thin k of it as a hidden band that contains t he group.
Social distance varies from species t o species.lt is quite short—a pparently only a few
yards—amo ng some an imals, and quite Ion g among ot hers.
