THESIS PAPER OF STUDENTS FROM FOREIGN LANGUAGES COLLEGE PAGE 摘要 《印度之行》被公认为是福斯特最杰出的作品。该小说以20世纪初受英国殖民统治的印度为背景,通过叙述一系列事例，展示了在英国殖民统治下印度的社会矛盾，反映了印度和英国人之间的文化对立和冲突。小说中存在着多个侧面的印度形象，既有关于印度被英国殖民的历史的客观记叙, 又有关于印度教、基督教和伊斯兰教的宗教差异的艺术直陈。本文的研究目的是通过对《印度之行》内容的分析，找出小说中文化冲突的表现方式。论文的研究方法主要是文献分析法：首先搜集与《印度之行》相关的文献，获得与之相关的资料信息；然后整理文献内容，获得研究所需的基本要素；最后在分析文献内容的基础上完成研究。论文主要有三部分构成。第一部分为引言部分，主要介绍了论文的研究背景及研究意义；第二部分讨论了小说中处于中心地位的英国文化与处于边缘地位的印度文化难以实现平等的交流；第三部分主要讨论了英印之间不同的行为标准及双方在交往中产生的障碍；第四部分主要讨论了小说中的三大宗教之间的差异，在小说中作者福斯特主要描写了三种宗教，它们分别是基督教，伊斯兰教和印度教，不同的宗教信仰使文化交流出现困难；第五部分为结论部分，在总结全文的基础上，论文得出的结论是不平等的文化地位、不同的行为标准以及不同的宗教信仰决定了文化冲突在英国人和印度人之间存在的必然性。 关键字：印度之行； 文化冲突；殖民统治； 宗教信仰 Abstract A Passage to India is generally accepted by critics as the most excellent novel of E. M. Forster. The setting of the novel is India in the early twentieth century when it was a British colony. The novel illustrates the social conflicts between the Indians and British and reflects the cultural opposition and clash between the Indian and British. There are multiple profiles of India in the novel, not only the objective narratives of the history of being colonized, but also the direct and artistic statement about the difference among Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The main research method is document analysis. The first step is collecting the documents related to the novel and getting the related information; the next step is reviewing contents of documents and getting the basic elements for the research. The last step is completing the research by analyzing the novel. The paper is composed of five parts, the first part is to introduce research background and significance of the study; the second part discusses the inequality of cultural status in the novel; the third part mainly discusses the different ethics between the Indian and the British; The fourth part mainly discusses the differences among the three major religions in India.
