PAGE 课前自主学习学案 Newspaper headline Info Newspaper headlines, in authentic newspapers especially, have their own language. First, headlines in English language newspapers are usually short and they thus tend to leave out all the inessential words, such as articles and auxiliary verbs. Because of that, headlines use short words wherever possible, rather than long ones. Sometimes, of course, the very briefness of headlines makes them ambiguous and difficult for the English language learners to understand. Second, journalists use a variety of techniques in order to attract and keep the reader’s attention. Some of them are pun (play on words), alliteration or rhyme. Grammar changes 1. 1.Headlines often use a noun phrase, that is, a phrase without a verb: Poor Service at Supermarkets Best Strategies for New Tax Year / Thai Protesters Parade 2.There are also some verb changes. Simple tenses instead of Continuous or Perfect Teachers Protest Pay Cuts (they are protesting) Underground Strike Started Today (the strike has started today) 5.The infinitive tense is used to talk about the future: President to Open New Art New Player to be hired by NBA 3.Auxiliary verbs are dropped in the passive: Robbers Judged at Big Trial Tomorrow (the robbers will be judged at a big trial tomorrow) 4. articles dropped Missed Child Found Safe (A child who was missing has been found safe) Vocabulary changes Here is a list of the most common words used in newspaper headlines with their meaning: 1 aid – help 16 drop – fall 2 allege – make an accusation 17 edge – move gradually 3 axe –cut 18 havoc – disturbance, chaos 4 back – support 19 head for – move towards 5 ban –prohibit 20 key – important 6 bid–attempt 21 loom– threaten to happen 7 blast – explosion 22 mob – angry crowd 8 blaze – fire 23 peak – high point 9 blow – unfortunate happening 24 plea – call for help 10 boost – encourage 25 probe – investigation 11 clash – conflict, disagreement 26 quit – abandon 12 clear – fin
