Chip giant Intel said it would invest $2.5 billion to build a 160,000 square meter microchip manufacturing plant in Dalian, a famous city in northeastern China, with the production of chipsets to begin in 2010. 1 The Introduction of Intel-Dalian Project 1. 1 Intel: the giant chip maker Intel, the world’s largest semi-conductor chip producer founded in 1968, leads the development trend of global semi-conductor industry and computer industry in CPU and MCU. Intel makes most of its chips in the US with manufacturing and outposts in Ireland and Israel 1. 2 The scale of the project The world’s largest computer-chip maker Intel won approval from China to invest $2.5 billion to build a 12-inch wafer fabrication plant in Dalian, the countrys top technology service outsourcing center in Northeast Chinas Liaoning Province, in what would be its biggest investment in Asia. Located at the Huaihedonglu Road, Development Zone (Kaifaqu) of Dalian, the factory started construction in 2007 and will commence production in 2010. The Dalian project is the companys first wafer fabrication maker in the Asia-Pacific region. Weve named the Dalian sector the No. 68 factory, said Intel Corps Chief Executive Paul Otellini. The 12-inch wafer process technology is the most advanced semiconductor technology that the US government allows for exports to China. The 12-inch (300-millimeter) integrated wafer plant in Dalian will have a monthly capacity of 52,000 chips. Intel has held in hand with the largest 12-inch wafer process lines throughout the world and Dalian project is Intels eighth one besides other factories in U.S., Ireland and Israel.
