Ashley marries Melanie Hamilton and Scarlett marries Melanies brother Charles, but she is soon widowed. Then she marries Frank Kennedy, her sisters fiancé, to save Tara, the family plantation, her home. Frank is also killed, and Scarlett finally marries Rhett, who walks out on her with the famous words “My dear, I dont give a damn”.1 The following paragraph is the review at that time. 1.1.1 “The historical background is the chief virtue of the book, and it is the story of the times rather than the unconvincing and somewhat absurd plot that gives Miss Mitchells work whatever importance may be attached to it. How accurate this history is for the expert to tell, but no reader can come away without a sense of the tragedy that overcame the planting families in 1865 and without a better understanding of the background of present-day Southern life.”2 Chapter 2 The American History in the Novel Gone with the Wind covers the whole period of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction, but it can not be defined as a good historical novel. Good historical nov
