Due to the advantages such as practicability and convenience, embedded products are accepted by more and more people. Especially in recent years, embedded systems are being widely used in various fields, such as national defense, industrial control, communication, office automation and consumer electronics fields. Therefore it is of high research value to design a smart control system with a graphical user interface. This paper is mainly about how to build such an embedded system for a fire alarm controller. This paper first gives a briefing on the development of fire alarm system and the advantages of ARM-based embedded systems. Then we talk about the research value of building a fire alarm controller on an ARM processor. We comprehensively analyses the need of the customer, as well as the CPU capability, consumption, interface and cost etc. and choose the S3C2410 CPU with an ARM920 core from SAMSUNG. as the core. Then we design the general layout and then focus on the components and characteristics of this Linux-based embedded system. The whole development process is mentioned. This paper mainly involves the analysis of Boot Loader, the configuration and compilation system of Linux kernel, CAN bus interface design and driver development, Qt/Embedded library porting. Besides, this paper also introduces how to set up the core cross compile environment for a Linux-based system and some other points. Finally, we provide the test results of the system. And the results show that the whole design has achieved the requirements.
