Unfortunately, many organizations are in this situation. The planners know that they want to go somewhere, but that somewhere has never been clearly defined or communicated. Lacking this critical information, they try to go everywhere in the hope that wherever the organization ends up will be better than where it is now. Management consulting is an ideas-driven profession. Consulting firms boom and fade as tools such as reengineering go in and out of fashion. Too many clients fall victim to wanting to get a dose of the latest technique, especially when it promises to reinvent their company. There are hot young consulting firms with exciting new approaches to management - many are listed in this directory - but clients are well-advised to apply healthy skepticism to hiring any consulting firm based on a tool or methodology. These are marketing terms. For most consultancies, the most important asset is its people. Over time, consulting firms that do the best work for clients are the ones with the best people. Good consulting remains expensive. Depending on the type of work, fees can range from around $100 per hour to well over $500. Interestingly, fees have not risen significantly for 30 years, when adjusting for inflation. In the past few years there has been more talk of contingent fees, where the consultant shares in the risk of undertaking a project; fees are then tied to measurable results. For consulting work focused on an objective, such as direct cost reduction, this approach can make good sense. However, the results of many management consulting projects are intangible or hard to measure. For clients dealing with limited budgets for consulting assignments, predetermined fixed fees are often more attractive.
