Abstract T he occurring , exp anding and agg ravat ing of so il er osion in t he Ch angjiang r iv er valley h ave t aken
a f airly long period of tim e. A ccording t o analy sis of hisorical mat er ial , soil erosion in t he v all ey w as slight
w ith dense v eg et at ion befo re t he 10 t h cent ury . F rom 10 t h cent ur y t o 17 t h century , the so il ero sion area w as
exp anded . Since mid-17th cent ury , due t o t he sharp incr ease in populat ion and ex ces sive ex plo it at ion in t he
mount ainou s and hilly areas of the valley, soil erosion h as been aggr av ated and becom e a ser io us environment
pr obl em . It w as proved t h at t he unreasonable ex ploit at ion of land r esources by mankind is a l eading f act or
cau sing soil er osion .
