ABSTRACT Diesel engines are the most popular power source for commercial vehicles because of their high heat efficiency and clean combustion potential, whereas it is necessary to address stringent regulatory requirements for further reduction of emissions. Due to diffusion combustion characteristics of conventional diesel engines, it is critical to obtain a good trade-off relationship between NOx and soot emissions. So we can conclude that reduction of NOx and soot emissions is a hot research topic. Theoretical reference was provided for improving the trade-off relationship between NOx and soot emissions by rational matching and optimizing of relevant parameters of fuel injection system, intake system and the combustion chamber shape. Numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the effects of parameters of fuel injection and intake systems on performance and emissions of a 4-cylinder high pressure common rail diesel engine. On one hand, one-dimensional investigation of effect of EGR on diesel performance was carried out to provide numerical boundary conditions for CFD analysis by using GT-POWER. On the other hand, in order to reduce NOx and soot emissions simultaneously, CFD analysis of parameters of fuel injection and intake systems was conducted by using a modified KIVA-3V code. Results showed that a narrow spray included angle, in combination with retarded single injection timings, had a better potential to reduce emissions of a diesel engine. Through optimization of relevant parameters which fuel injection duration was reduced from 15 CAD to 10 CAD and start of injection(SOI)was advanced from 0°CA BTDC to 6°CA BTDC with 40% EGR, perfect combustion characteristics and low emissions could be achieved. A good trade-off relationship between NOx and soot emissions was obtained with a nozzle tip protrusion(NTP)at 1.0 mm, and good engine performance was identically achieved by shortening fuel injection duration with proper EGR rates.
