A Study of Jia Dao’s Poetry Abstract Jia Dao was a famous poet in the middle of Tang Dynasty and influenced the poets in the following times for his unique works of five-character-lvshi, a poem which has eight lines and each line contains five characters. However, little study has been conducted on Jia’s poetry since the 20th century, and the existing studies often have the view that the thoughts of Jia’s poetry wasn’t very sound and Jia wrote too many deserted, bitter and trifling things. Beginning with a comprehensive research into the whole poetry of Jia Dao, the present thesis tries to show the readers a contradict, complex and emotional Jia Dao and make people have a full thought about Jia Dao’s versatility in poems. Born in last years of the age, Jia Dao cherished the ideal of saving the nation, but he failed in imperial examinations for different reasons so that he was poor and suffered a lot, therefore, he indeed expressed the feelings of misery and gloom, and described the trifling things in many poems. However, the lofty aspirations and ideals, the flames of fury and indignation also burst out as soon as the chance came. Moreover, Jia Dao preserved his moral integrity and had the sincere attitude to every people all his life, especially he could have a clear understanding about the society and the sufferings of the people. In the artistry, Jia Dao was best at five-character-lvshi and made great artistic success in the style although he was placed in the Han Yu and Meng Jiao school. Jia’s five-character-lvshi had many remarkable peculiarities, namely, the diverse styles, the fusion of emotion and the description of landscapes, the special artistic objects, the precise and succinct language, the verified sentences and so on, so that he had built and led his own group in fact.
