and indirect written corrective feedback have on the writing accuracy of students?2)For the higher-and lower-level students respectively,which kind of written corrective feedback is more beneficial to the improvement of writing accuracy?To fulfill the purpose of the study,8 1 students from a senior high school in Changsha were assigned to one of the three parallel groups:the direct group with provision of the correct form near an error,the indirect group with underlying and simple Chinese description of the types of errors,and the control group without any corrective feedback.There were 27 students in each group,and based on their English capacity,the first 1/3 and the last 1/3 students in each
experimental group were classified as the higher-level and the lower.1evel students respectively.Each subj ect was asked to write six English compositions altogether.A pre—test,an immediate post-test and a delayed post-test were conducted to monitor the changes of their writing accuracy
over time.The experiment lasted for fourteen weeks.The error rate was
measured by the number of errors per 1 00 words and the data were analyzed by SPSS 2 1.0.
The study obtained the following results:
For the first research question,thi s study found that the written corrective feedback could significantly improve high school students’ writing accuracy in their English compositions,no matter it was in the way of direct correction or in the way of underlining errors with the
Chinese description about the error types.Besides,the direct feedback

may be more effective in reducing students’linguistic errors in the short term,since it was salient enough for a learner to notice the gap between the target form and the language he used.However,the indirect feedback might be more beneficial in the long run,for it involved deeper processing about the language,through which linguistic knowledge might get further internalized.
