Based on the case of 8530TEU container ship, it calculates the residual ultimate tensile strength of a deck plate with initial crack. The results show that: the initial crack size has a very large impact on the crack propagation in its life; and a critical value is found in crack propagation lifetime. When larger than the threshold value, the rapid of crack propagation increases, the residual tensile strength decreases rapidly, and the deck will be fracture usually within three to five years. So it is recommended that in the first 10 years, the target deck needs to be inspected and the serious parts needs to be changed.
