At one time oats were second only to wheat in economic importance as a crop. Oats provided the fuel for horses that worked the fields and were a preferred feed for cattle and hogs. After the second world war, oat acreages began a prolonged period of steady decline. The reason for this decline was the declining horse population plus the emergence of barley as a preferred feed for livestock. During the 1980’s, total acreage in oats decline to below 1 million and oats was nearly reclassified from a major crop to a specialty crop in Saskatchewan.
