Radical materials research can drive the creation of new products or even new industries, but stable industries also employ materials scientists to make incremental improvement and troubleshoot issues with currently used materials. Industrial applications of materials science include materials design, cost-benefit trade-offs in industrial production of materials, processing and analytical techniques. Austria has a long tradition in materials science. In the area of metals research Austria has over 100 companies with a turnover of € 43 billion, an export quota of 90% and a budget for RD of about € 400 million a year. Several research institutes are working in the area of advanced materials. Materials science is a very important research field in Austria and is funded by several research programs from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) with about € 200 million a year.
