Abstract Wei-JinandSouthernandNorthernDynastyofChinaistheperiodthathasthe mostfrequentchangesofregimeinChinesehistory.Thechangesalsohadserious impactonthedevelopmentsofChineseculture.Theoutstandingperformanceswere theriseofMetaphysicswhichwereacombinationofConfucianismandTaoismand theprevalenceofBuddhism.Thecultureduringthisperiodwasexpressedina complicatedwaybecauseoftheinterplayofvariousculturalfactors.LiuXiecreated thebooknamedliterarymindandthecarvingofdragonswhichwasthefirstliterary theorymonographinthehistoryoftheChineseLiteraryCriticism.Therichvarietyof culturalconnotationswasalsoareflectionofthatera. PreviousstudieshavegraduallyfoundalotofexamplesofLiu’sconceptof Buddhisminthebookoftheliterarymindandthecarvingofdragons.Thisthesis aimstodiscussLiusconceptofBuddhismbasedontheothertwoeminentwritersand theirrelatedworks.OneisLiuXieandtheliterarymindandthecarvingofdragons, theotherismonkSeng-zhaowhowasalittleolderthanLiuandhisfamousworks aboutNon-sunyaTheorycalledThreeThesesofSeng-zhao.Thethesisdissertsfrom fourparts. Thefirstpartisanintroduction,whichmainlydescribesthereasonsforchoosing thesetwoworksandsummarizespreviousscholars’researchachievementsofLiu’s Buddhistthought. ThesecondpartdiscussesthetheoreticalpossibilityofLiu’sBuddhistthought whichinheritedfromSeng-zhao,statsLiu’sandSeng-zhao’slifetime,analysesthe writingbackgroundofthetwoimportantworks,andfindsoutthestrongpossibility whichLiuusedtoreadSeng-zhao’sbookandbeimpactedbySeng-zhaodirectly. Thethirdpartmainlyanalyzesthesimilarityofthetwoworksonthethoughtof radicalreformandmadhyamika,whichprovesthattheevidencewhichLiuinherited thethoughtofSunyafromSeng-zhao.
