Step 1: Lead-in
T: Reading novels is great for building our vocabulary and enhancing our own writing abilities. Its also a pleasant way to pass our free time when travelling. Boys and girls, do you often read novels? If so, do you read them word by word or just read quickly to get the general idea?

T: When you read a novel, you should skim and reads bits and pieces here and there through out the novel to get the general idea of it, you also can read the end of the novel, is there a conclusion or is it open-ended? In a word, when reading a novel, read it quickly. You don’t need to understand each word.
Step2: Enjoy the excerpt of a novel
Read the article on Page 117, then answer the questions.
1.Who was the murderer, a man or a woman?
The murder was a man.
2. What was the murderer like/
He was more than six feet tall, was in the prime of life and had small feet for his height.
3.How was the murderer done?
The murderer was done with poison.
4.What is the meaning of “Rache” in German?
“Rache” is for “revenge” in German.
5.Who were the other two detectives?
Lestrade and Gregson.
6.Who were the two detective looking for?
Miss Rachel.

T: Well, there are some new words in the excerpt, and some sentences with more difficult words are left out. But you can still answer the four questions that help you get the general idea of the story.
