Methods: Totally 252 clinical nurses were recruited from 12 medical institutions in Kunshan and investigated by a self-designed questionnaire including major temperature measurement devices, thermometer usage management, nurses cognitions of various kinds of thermometers usage and mercury pollution hazard. Results: The usage rates of mercury thermometer and mercury free thermometers in medical institutions were 100% and 48.39%, respectively. About 90.08% nurses had the experience of breaking mercury thermometer and only 48.63% of them considered they could properly handle the leakage of mercury in the environment. The cognition rates of the mercury free thermometers usage method and usage matters needing attention were 30%, which was statistically significant with those of mercury-thermometers.
