ii ii Abstract Metaphor has become a heated topic as a way of cognition more than a linguistic phenomenon since the publication of Metaphors We Live By by Lakoff and Johnson in 1980. According to them, human conceptual system, in terms of which we think and act, is essentially metaphorical. Therefore, metaphor is everywhere in our thinking and everyday language. Thus it is natural that the language of sports is metaphorical in nature as well. Previous studies have extended to the use of metaphors in political and economical discourses and the outcomes are fruitful. In contrast, researches on the use of metaphors in sports discourse are comparatively limited. Sports news, among other sports texts, has emerged as the main medium for people to get sports information due to its characteristics of being informative and timely. A lot of studies tend to deal with sports news from the perspectives of rhetoric and translation. In recent years, with the development of cognitive linguistics, more and more scholars have attempted to investigate into sports news from the angle of metaphor. Previous research concentrates mostly on one language and there is little research on metaphors in Chinese and English news. In view of this fact, the current study focuses chiefly on the contrastive analysis of metaphors in Chinese and English sports news. The theoretical base of this study is Lakoff and Johnson’s theory of conceptual metaphor. With the combination of the qualitative and quantitative methods, the procedure of this study is divided into three stages, namely the statistics and categorization of metaphors, the interpretation of the metaphors, and the comparison between the Chinese and English metaphors as well as the account for the reasons for the underlying causes leading to the similarities and differences.
