Abstract
In recent years, with the rapid development of the world economy and frequent contacts between different countries, intercultural communication is getting more and more important. However, misunderstanding often occurs in intercultural communication due to various reasons. Misunderstanding might result in anger, quarrel and conflict. It may even arouse racial discrimination and hatred between people from different cultures or countries. The thesis, by analysis the reason for intercultural misunderstanding with the new cognitive theory—Relevance Theory which belongs to cognitive pragmatics, attempts to deepen our understanding of misunderstanding so as to avoid or reduce it in intercultural communication.
In the book Relevance: Communication and Cognition, Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson proposed Relevance Theory which aims to explain how the hearer infers the speaker’s intended meaning in 1986. Sperber and Wilson point out that communication is an ostensive-inferential process. For the speaker, on the basis of assumptions s/he made about hearer, s/he makes manifest his/her informative intention and communicative intention through ostensive behavior. For the hearer, communication is a process in which s/he infers the speaker’s communicative intention on the basis of the combination of the hearer’s ostensive behavior and his/her own context.
