ACognitiveStudyofChineseNewAppellationTermsAThesisSubmittedtoForeignStudiesCollegeOfHunanNormalUniversityInPartialFulfillmentoftheRequirementsFortheDegreeofMasterofArtsintheSubjectofForeignLinguisticsandAppliedLinguisticsByYangXiaoliUndertheSupervisionofProfessorLiaoGuangrongChangsha，HunanMay2011L．一AbstractTheappellationtermhasalwaysbeenahottopicinthelinguisticsresearch．Inthepreviousresearches，linguistshavemainlydiscussedtheusagesoftheappellationtermsinthespeechcommunicationinthelightsofthesociallinguistics．Withthedevelopmentofthesociety,moreandmoreChinesenewappellationtermscomeintoexistence．However,thestudyofChinesenewappellationtermsreceivedlittleattention·Employingthelinguistictheoriesfromcognitivelinguisticsandsociallinguistics，thisthesisaimstogiveafulldescriptionofChinesenewappellationterms．Itstudiestheclassification，origins，structureandmeaningofChinesenewappellationterms．TheresearchfocuswillbegiventomeaningconstructionofChinesenewappellationterms·Thisthesisfirstclassifiesnewappellationtermsbasedontheirusagedomainsanddiscussestheoriginsofeachkindofnewterms．Thentheresearchemphasisisgiventothestructuralandsemanticanalysisofthenewterms·Thestructuralanalysisofnewtermsemphasizesthewordformationand1inguisticstructuresofnewterms．Thesemanticanalysisofthesetermstriestoexplaintheirmeaninggenerationandsemanticchangefromthecognitiveperspective．Thisthesiscollects252Chinesenewappellationtermsdatedfrom1990s．ThesignificanceofthisthesisisthatthisthesisprovidesanewresearchperspectivetothestudyofChineseappellationtermsbyemployingtheoriesfromcognitivelinguistic．Themajorfindingsofthisthesisarelistedasfollows．First，Chinesenewappellationtermscanbedividedintothreekinds：familyappellationterms，socialappellationtermsandnetworkappellationterms．Accordingtothedatastatistics，newsocialappellationtermstakethelargestproportion，newfamilyappellationtermstakethesmallestproportionandtheproportiontakenbynewnetworkappellationtermsisonthewayofrising．Thesenewtermshavedifferentorigins．Theoriginsincludea
