However, ROS also control many different processes in plants, such as growth, development, pathogen defense, programmed cell death, hormone signaling, biotic and abiotic stress responses and cell cycle as signaling molecules. How this conflict is resolved in plants is largely unknown. Nonetheless, it is clear that the steady-state level of ROS in cells needs to be tightly regulated. In Arabidopsis, a network of at least 152 genes is involved in managing the level of ROS. This network is highly dynamic and redundant, and encodes ROS-scavenging and ROS-producing proteins. This review discusses the cellular localization and coordination of key genes in the network, the regulation of ROS signaling by the reactive oxygen gene network in plant cell, especially in chloroplasts which are more prone to oxidative damage than any other organelle.
