The topic of this Module is about geographical direction. This is the second period of Module 8. Washington D.C. and geographical locations of North American countries
Language Function
Students can judge and describe directions by maps.
Teaching aims
1. Aims on the knowledge
(1) Students can listen, speak and read the words “east, west, south, north, speak and Washington D.C.”, as well as listen, speak, read and write “New York, Los Angeles, Canada and Mexico”.
(2) Students can master the basic sentence patterns “The capital of ______ is _______. ________ is in/to the east/west/north/south of _______.” Those are the key points and difficult points.
(3) Students can understand the context and know the basic information of North American geographical directions.
(4) Students can listen, repeat and retell the text.
2. Aims on the abilities
(1) Students can introduce the geographical locations of American cities and three North American countries by using “in/to the east/west/north/south of”.
(2) According to a Chinese map, students can introduce Chinese cities with partners.
(3) Students can introduce a community and be able to design a new one by themselves.
3. Aims on the emotion
Enable students to know the background culture of North America, especially America, so as to enrich the knowledge of students and broaden their horizons.
Teaching procedures
Step 1: Warm-up and review
1. Watch a video about America.
2. Review the locations of Los Angeles and New York.
Step 2: Presentation and practice
1. Observe the map of America and find the location of Washington, D.C, then try to introduce it. Washington, D.C. is in the east of America.
2. Learn more about Washington
Watch the CD-ROM.

Students can understand the meaning of “capital” and try to use it.
