Introduction Daniel Defoe?(1660—1731), an English author, is the founder of the realistic novel, and is regarded as the?“father of novel”. The theme in his novels mainly covers man’s overcoming tribulations through his wisdom, courage and efforts. Defoe’s works are full of complicated plot, which are of high readability. Those works all present an overall view of the general mood of society filled with adventurous spirit and struggle. Of all Defoe’s works, Robinson Crusoe is well known throughout the world and the hero Robinson has become a typical figure to fight against tribulations. Hence, Defoe has been looked upon as one of the England’s novel’s founders, the first important novelist in the English literary history. In 1719 Defoe published his first novel Robinson Crusoe and it received a warm welcome. Later in 1720 appeared Captain Singleton, Duncan Campbell, and Memoirs of Cavalier, in 1722, Colonel Jack, Moll Flanders, and the amazingly realistic Journal of the Plague Year. So the list grows with astonishing rapidity, ending with The History of the Devil in 1726. Robinson Crusoe is a world-famous, influential novel in which the strong progressive spirit of capitalism and the sense of enlightenment are displayed. This novel derives from the true experience of a Scotland sailor Cylk. In 1704 Cylk had a quarrel with his captain and then was left on a deserted island. Four years later he was brought back to England. Although he did nothing great on the island, Defoe found great illumination in his story and created Robinson Crusoe, who was regarded as a great hero among the bourgeoisie and the first ideal newly emergent bourgeoisie in the western literary history. Robinson came from a bourgeoisie family. His father’s philosophy was that enough was as good as a feast. When his father tried to ask him not to sail for sea, his father said:” it was for men of desperate fortunes on one h
