Her writing career spans almost half a century and her works cover a broad field including novels, short stories, plays and biographies. Because of her works being full of mystery, romance and suspense, she won Mystery Writers of America Grad Master Award. As her masterpiece, Rebecca made a splash in literary circles and was the bestseller in England and America. This novel mainly portrays two women featured with totally different personalities, so there are a large number of critics interpreted it from the perspective of feminism to praise Rebecca, yet to show enough sympathy and condemnation to the leading lady. This thesis uses Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to reexamine the leading lady, to explore her psychological growth from shyness and cowardice to a mature and courageous lady and to show the factors that drive her to final success and self-actualization. This thesis is composed of six parts. The first part is an introduction. The brief introduction about the author and the novel is given in this part. This chapter also introduces the background, the purpose and the framework of this thesis. The second part is literature review and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Literature review generalizes the domestic and overseas researches on Rebecca. As for Rebecca, there is a large number of critics study it from gothic, suspense and romanticism perspective to analyze Daphne’s writing styles and the true personalities of Rebecca in Rebecca. There are few critics explore the leading lady’s characteristics from psychological perspective. To fill the blank, this thesis will analyze the leading lady from Maslow’s theory perspective.
