Significance of the present study The present study is of great value in terms of both theoretical and pedagogical implications to English for Academic Purpose (EAP) and English for Specific Purpose (ESP) researches and instructions. It intends to enrich ESP genre analysis approach by identifying the genre structure of Method sections which fulfill certain communicative purpose in the field of linguistics. Moreover, the paper examine the linguistic features of each move and step in relation to communicative functions, which can provide implications in the learning and teaching of Method sections writing in the field of applied linguistics. Research questions What is the generic structure of Method sections of journal papers in applied linguistics? How are individual moves and constituent steps realized in lexical and syntactic choices? Organization/Structure of the thesis This paper consists of five parts. The first part, introduction, presents the background information, explains the significance of the present research, puts forward the research questions and outlines the structure of the paper. The part of literature review presents theoretical background by introducing such key concepts as genre and genre analysis, and reviews previous research on genre analysis and Method sections. In the Methodology section, the data collection and data analysis procedures are described. Results and discussion section follows subsequently. This part presents the generic structure of Method sections, namely, moves and steps. Comparison and contrast of rhetoric model of two types of Method section with varied data sources are conducted as well. In addition, the linguistic features that realize the individual moves and constituent steps are described in this section. The last part concludes the present study by summarizing the major research findings, pointing out limit
