Paragraph 4 What lesson did Lincoln learn from his previous experiences? Never again did he write an insulting letter. Never again did he ridicule anyone. eg:我再也不会犯同样的错误了。 Never again will I make the same mistake. Invaluable Paragraph 5 Time after time, during the Civil War, what happened? (new generals he appointed made many mistakes during the civil war.) blunder pace the floor: Eg: pace the room 在房间里踱来踱去 How about the nation’s attitude towards these generals? But what about Lincoln’s attitude? (with malice toward none, with charity for all. Judge not, that ye be not judged.) Paraphrase these two sentences: Hold one’s peace: hold one’s tongue 保持沉默 Paragraph 6-11 From previous paragraph, we know that criticizing others is not good, we are not suggested to criticize others, but if someone has the occasion to criticize, then who is he? -- occasion What happened in the battle? -- retreat -- deluge -- surge What did General Meade do? -- point-blank What was Lincoln’s attitudes toward this matter? -- in bitter disappointment -- wrote a letter of great restraint Paraphrase Lincoln’s attitudes Lincoln was very disappointed and angry, but when he wrote the letter he restrained himself (controlled his bad feeling) I do not believe you appreciate the magnitude of the misfortune involved in Lee’s escape. He was within our easy grasp. And to have closed upon him would, in connection with our other successes, have ended the war. As it is, the war will be prolonged indefinitely. If you could not safely attack Lee last Monday, how can you possibly do so south of the river, when you can take with you very few–- no more than two-thirds of the force you then had in hand? It would be unreasonable to expect and I do not expect that you can now affect much. Your golden opportunity is gone, and I am distressed immeasurably because of it. What do you think Meade did when he read the letter? Why didn’t Lincoln mail the letter? --- shriek ---
