摘要尤多拉·韦尔蒂(Eudora 摘要 尤多拉·韦尔蒂(Eudora Welty，1909—2001)，美国女作家，被公认为“南方 文学”最出色的小说家之一。韦尔蒂不仅享有短篇小说家的美誉，1970年出版 的长篇小说《失败的战争》更奠定了她作为美国第一流作家的地位。本论文将运 用巴赫金的复调小说理论研究分析《失败的战争》中的复调特征，以此展现韦尔 蒂是如何演绎沃恩家族，这个生活在美国南方农村特定历史时期的特殊群体的命 运以及美国南方社会的巨大变革的。 巴赫金的复调理论可以分为三个部分：时空体理论，对话理论和狂欢理论。 在细读文本的基础上，本论文将用巴赫金的前两个理论解读《失败的战争》中的 复调特征以此来回答以下三个问题：韦尔蒂是如何用精心布置的时空世界来展现 沃恩家族不同层次的失败的，以及为什么这么做?韦尔蒂是如何借用对话的形式 来分析沃恩家族失败的内外因的?韦尔蒂又是如何为南方农村寻找出路的? 首先，笔者运用复调理论中的时空体理论展示小说中时空布局特色，并进一 步分析韦尔蒂精心布置时空语词的用意，由此，沃恩家族多重的失败以及整个南 方社会的衰败凸现在韦尔蒂精心布置的时空体中。其次，本文试图用巴赫金的对 话理论来倾听故事中由各种不同声音交汇成的对话，并分析《失败的战争》中的 “大型对话”和“微型对话”。通过分析小说中原居民与两组“外来者”的“大 型对话”以及小说中的“微型对话”——小说的标题“失败的战争”，沃恩家族 失败的内因和外因呈现在了读者面前。韦尔蒂不仅关注南方社会的弊病，同时也 关注新一代南方人是如何摆脱过去的历史阴影重新面对已经改变的新世界。她着 力塑造了新一代南方人形象——新一代的南方人十分重视个人价值的体现并且 积极地追求自由、独立精神。 通过以上分析，本论文从一个全新的视角解读了韦尔蒂的长篇小说《失败的 战争》。为了反映她那片爱恨交织的南方土地j韦尔蒂通过描写沃恩家族经历的 各层面的斗争与失败，反映了美国南方农村破产的严酷现实，勾勒出南方农业社 会的历史发展轨迹。 关键词：尤多拉·韦尔蒂；《失败的战争》； 时空体；对话理论 IV AbstractEudora Abstract Eudora Welty(1909—2001)is widely regarded as one of the foremost writers in 血e 20血century．In 1970，Welty brought out all impressive novel，Losing Battles，with which she became a novelist in addition to being all established writer ofshort stories． This thesis attempts to apply Bakhtin’S theory to interpret the polyphonic features of Losing Battles and explores how Welty examines the fate of the family living in the unique historical period in southern rural areas of America and the great ta'ansformation ofthe South． Bakhtin’S theory can roughly be sorted into three categories：the chronotope theory(or time—space theory)，the dialogue theory and the carnival theory．On the basis of a comprehensively textual reading，this paper will employ the first two theories to interpret the polyphonic features of the story and then answer the following three questions：How and why does Welty design a time-space to expose different and various failures of the Vaughn family?How does Welty employ a form ofdialogue to analyze the external and internal canses ofthe Vaughns’failures?How d
