This thesis firstly introduces the fact that the students have poor communicative competence and they learn English just for exams sake and then points out that to improve their communicative competence we should cultivate their intercultural awareness. Chapter one looks back to the history of intercultural communication home and abroad and the work done by the pioneers who gave their research in this field both in theory and in practice. Chapter two mainly talks about language, culture and communication and the close relationship among the above three. In addition, the thesis also mentions the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis to prove the importance of culture teaching in class. Chapter three, as the methodology in the cultivation of intercultural awareness, is the most important part of the whole thesis. The author just took two terms to make an experiment to train the students. In the experiment, two classes are randomly selected and one is the experimental class and the other is the control class. At the beginning, the students in the experimental class and the control class are all required to do the questionnaire, pre-test and the data, which is analyzed by SPSS13.0 statistical analysis software, shows no difference between them. For the next two terms, the students in experimental class are taught much intercultural knowledge with various teaching methods and each method plays its role in practice. At the same time, the students in control class are still taught in the traditional way by comparison. It is conceivable that in the post-test the students in experimental class get much higher score than the students in the control class, which proves the former teaching is successful and effective. In the interview after post-test, the students in the experimental class also regard that they have improved English intercultural awareness and intercultural communication competence.
