Finally, my thanks go to my dear parents for their constant encouragement and support for my studies. ii ii Abstract This thesis aims at a thorough study of James Legge‘s translation of The Analects Of Confucius. The focuses are on the translation skills and the translation strategies. According to convention of translation, the domestication strategy was supposed to be adopted for the English translation of The Analects Of Confucius in the late Qing Dynasty. However, James Legge adopted the foreignization strategy instead. This thesis makes a thorough study on the issue. In the last 20 years in China, the study on the translation of The Analects Of Confucius has been on: versions (on single versions or on different versions), translators, publishers‘ comments, circulation, key words, and etc. Among them, versions have ever been focused.
