华 华 中 科 技 大 学 硕 士 学 位 论 文 II II Abstract Liu Xinglong’s novel “Skywalker”, is not only an extension of his previous novella “The Phoenix Zither”, but a deeper depiction and analysis of the local teachers living at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Focusing on the main story line as well as the branch lines of the conflict in the novel’s structure, this paper intends to show how the story is woven skillfully with the conflicts and the artistic methods demonstrated in the depiction of the characters in the novel. The main story line which runs through the whole novel is formed by the various conflicts faced by the main characters in Jieling. The paper will focus on three aspects of the novel, i.e., the conflict between individual with the exterior environment, men’s conflict with others as well as the inner struggles within the characters. As for the first aspect, the author portrays characters set in extremely tough natural surroundings, poor economic conditions and tyrannical social conditions and depicts typical characters in typical environment by capturing the struggles between men and outer environment. The second aspect featuring men versus other individuals presents the conflicts between the new generation and old generation and the process of the melting of the conflicts, making the characters rounder and more real. The last aspect deals with the subtle and complicated psychological changes of the main characters’ different attitudes towards the same subject to bring out the complexity of the characters’ personalities. In the last part, this paper analyzes the arrangement of the branch lines of the conflicts in the novel, that is, the conflicts in the emotional world of the main figures, in an attempt to highlight the author’s remarkable skills shown in the characterization with the conflicts in the novel.
