Although Koch Industries operates in very diverse markets today, much of Koch’s early history centers around the refining industry and other petroleum-related businesses. Fred Koch, co-founder of what is now Koch Industries, was born and raised in Texas. A chemical engineering graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Fred settled in Wichita, Kansas, in 1925, providing engineering services to regional oil companies.
