T cell receptors (TCRs) recognize peptides in the peptide-MHC complex; and CD4 or CD8 molecules (molecules expressed on the surface of T cells) must recognize MHC-II or MHC-I molecules, respectively. So, T cell recognition is restricted by MHC molecules. Peter Doherty and Rolf Zingernagel Nobel prize winners for physiology or Medicine, 1996 For the epochal discovery of MHC restriction of T-cell recognition and the single T-cell receptor altered-self hypothesis For the landmark discovery of MHC restriction of T-cell recognition, and the altered-self hypothesis. The importance of this research defined that the immune cells capable of killing virus infected cells must recognize a part of the virus together with molecules of the host called major histocompatability (MHC) antigens. This requirement has been termed MHC-restriction and is the basis of all cellular immune responses. This finding has been useful in many areas of research where understanding the nature of the cellular immune response is critical. This inc
