Test of English for Academic Purposes (draft) The Nature of TEAP The Test of English for Academic Purpose, as a criterion-referenced?proficiency?test, is targeted at undergraduates in institutions of higher learning (also including graduate students). The test paper is temporarily set by reference to the Academic English Proficiency Rating Scale in Shanghai Universities English Teaching Reference Frame (trial) and the General Academic English Teaching Reference Vocabulary. By a combination of questions that directly test various English skills of students and indirect objective questions, the test aims to measure students’ general academic English competence, which consist of oral and written communicative abilities such as the abilities of attending lectures, taking notes, reading literature, writing abstracts and thesis and participating academic discussion. The Purposes of TEAP The National Outline for Medium-and Long-Term Educational Reform and Development (2010-2020) stresses the needs of cultivating international talents who are possessed of global visions, acquainted with international rules and capable of participating in international affairs and competition. Moreover in Advices on the Implementation of Undergraduate Teaching Quality and Reform Project the Ministry of Education points out that colleges and universities should enhance both students’ professional English level and the capability of using English in performing scientific researches. In line with national requirements, Shanghai Universities English Teaching Reference Frame puts forward that the objective of college English teaching is to develop students’ academic English communication competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, which allow them direct use of English in their professional learning and work in the future and international communication ability in their professional fields.
