内容提要：作为融合了中国与欧美两种复杂知识传统的特殊体系，欧美中国艺术史自 内容提要： 作为融合了中国与欧美两种复杂知识传统的特殊体系，欧美中国艺术史自 上世纪80年代以来有了新的发展，并深刻地受到自60年代起流行于欧美的各 种学术思潮的影响，这些学术思潮潜移默化地促使欧美中国艺术史重新审视中 国艺术史研究传统。在吸收了中国艺术史的传统研究方法和西方的“新艺术史”， 尤其是社会艺术史方法后，欧美中国艺术史进入新的阶段。在新一代学者中， 包华石(MartinPowers)和克霄格-克鲁纳斯(Craig C|unas)极具代表性， 前者对汉代艺术与公众、艺术趣味与集团利益，后者对中国十三世纪以来的物 质文化视觉文化做出了开创性的研究。他们通过解析艺术品在社会文化中的角 色与作用进一步洞悉中国艺术及人的精神；他们积极倡导在艺术研究中打破国 家主义，给艺术史研究创造一个脱离范畴化的平台。他们的探究代表了两种欧 美中国视觉艺术研究的实践，尽管其研究方法与对象有所不同，但是通过本文 的论述，我们会发现，其研究结果殊途同归，都是要理解潜含于中国艺术中的 政治和社会因素，当包华石试图以“中国人的方式”来理解中国艺术，将汉代 艺术阐释成政治表达工具时，克鲁纳斯则完全用西方人的眼光“观看”中国视 觉文化，将明代艺术转换成开启和理顺明代社会复杂结构的钥匙。不同的研究 方法与对象的结合使得两种视觉艺术研究呈现出既有关联又存差异的生动面 貌，他们及其他一些欧美中国艺术史家共同演绎了欧美中国艺术史的新篇章。 本文将尽可能深入地探讨包华石和克雷格．克鲁纳斯的艺术史方法，并以此为主 线梳理欧美中国艺术史近来的发展状况、研究形态及跨文化艺术史研究中的得 失利弊，以期为客观评价欧美中国艺术史做一点应有的贡献。 关键词：欧美中国艺术史公众集团利益视觉艺术艺术史跨语境研究 Abstract．-This Abstract．- This thesis is an attempt to explore some recent approaches to the history of Chinese Art by Euro-American scholars by examining the major works of Martin Powers and Craig Clunas，who represent the new force of the field．While， an American，Martin Powers has attempted to interpret the art of the Han Dynasty as means ofpolitical expression as much as from a viewpoint ofwhat it might be understood by a Chinese，The English scholar Craig Clunas has tried to view the visual culture of the Ming Dynasty entirely from a Western perspective． However different their approaches may be，their studies invariably lead them to a systematic consideration of the underlying political and social implications of the objeets under examination．Their achievements represent the suggestive efforts that have been made by the scholars of Chinese art in the west to combine apply Western theories and methods to the studying of Chinese material．For this reason，this thesis is also concerned with some aspects of the general developments of Euro-American art history,against which to illuminate the concepts that underlie the art historical work of the two scholars under study．In the meantime，the last chapter
