Therefore, you had to make do with the things that you had and you used items in many different ways. After the War in the North There were about 360,000 deaths on the Union (North) side of the war. After the War in the North Many freed slaves moved to the North. The Northern states gained a lot of power in the government. After the War in the South There were about 260,000 deaths on the side of the South. It took along time for the South to recover. After the War in the South Cities and towns had to be rebuilt. People had a hard time believing the war was really over. The end of Slavery As a result of Abraham Lincoln’s decision. African slaves now had their freedom. They were no longer owned like property. The end of Slavery Slaves no longer had to live and work on plantations. However, some slaves did stay and work for their former owners. They were still free. What next? Most ex-slaves had no education,
