The English Renaissance Introduction The Renaissance, which began in the 14th century in Italy, was a great cultural and intellectual movement that swept the whole Europe. The peak of the Renaissance can be shown to have occurred at different countries at different times. The English Renaissance is sometimes referred to as the age of Shakespeare or the Elizabethan era, the first period in English history to be named after a reigning monarch. However it is worth remembering that these names are rather misleading: Shakespeare was not an especially famous writer in his own time, and the English Renaissance covers a period both before and after Elizabeths reign.  Background Politically, In England, the Renaissance was usually thought of as beginning with the accession of the House of Tudor to the throne in 1485,which marks the end of the period of civil war among the old feudal aristocracy in mid-15th century, and the establishment of a modern, efficient, centralized state. Technically, the date is close to that of the introduction of printing into England by William Caxton (1422-1491). Culturally, the first important period in England was the reign of the second Tudor monarch, Henry VIII.
