Unit Four My First Job

Step One Warm-up Questions and Introductory Remarks
Teacher: Before we study the text, I’d like to ask you some questions.
1. Have you ever applied for a job?
2. Have you had the experience of being interviewed?
3. What is an interview?
4. For what purpose is an interview needed?
Everyone wants to find a good job. What’s the procedure for job hunting then? This text tells a true story of a young man, the first job he applied for, and the first job interview he experienced. Let’s see what happened and what we can learn from it.

Introductory questions:
1. How do you know about British state schools?
The system of secondary education in Britain has been changed in recent years. Under the old system, children took an examination called the “eleven plus” at the age of eleven. If they passed this examination, they went to a grammar school (high school) and if they failed, they went to a secondary modern school.
Under the new system, there is no examination at the age of eleven, and the grammar schools and secondary modern schools have been replaced by large comprehensive schools. Some comprehensive are “streamed”; other are “unstreamed”. In a streamed school, pupils are placed into classes according to their ability.
