Unit3 Reading 优教教学设计(一)
Reading: JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONG
教材分析
The passage is the highlight of this unit. It is a piece of travel journal written by Wang Kun. It mainly talks about Wang Kun and his sister’s dream of taking a great bike trip down the Mekong River, their preparations for the trip and some more details of the Mekong River. Critical thinking skills to be developed in this unit will include planning for a trip and solving problems after the trip has begun. The focus in this unit is on how to make travel plans and how to find ways to travel. Practice with creative writing is continued in this unit. Students learn about the purpose of the journal and how it com-pares with the dairy.
Warming Up introduces two activities. The first activity is to allow students to examine their attitudes to various forms of travel and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages for each kind of travel. The second activity is to use the information on different forms of travel to plan a holiday.
Pre-reading asks students to consider how important a river can be in people’s daily life. Encourage students to name some great rivers that they have heard about. It provides a context for students as they begin the reading.
The reading passage titled JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONG Part 1 The Dream and the Plan is written as a personal entry in a travel journal. This part gives students the background about the bike trip, especially the planning that went into it. It is organized chronologically, which is good for students to practice the techniques of reading: guess the meaning of new words by using the context; skim the reading passage to get the main idea of the first part; scan the whole text to get the detailed information of the text; read the text carefully and answer the questions to understand the text thoroughly, that is intensive reading.
To enhance their understanding of the reading passage, students should be required to retell the text in their own words at the end of the class.
