After looked at the distributed element service, let’s now check out how the dynamic shared library works. As we can see here, the first step is still the element service provider register the service first. Then after the request comes in, the registry can be queried to find out where the element is. Then the element (in the form of dynamic shared library) can be downloaded by using either FTP or HTTP protocols. For the final stage, the downloaded shared library can link with Analysis core to perform the analysis. The difference between this dynamic binding and the static binding is that static binding happens during the compilation time whereas the dynamic binding happens during the run-time. To see the advantages and disadvantages of dynamic shared library, basically it’s the tradeoff between flexibility and performance. Of course, here the performance issue is by comparing with static binding library. Some other disadvantages are security and platform dependency. * Jun Peng Stanford University – Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Nov 17, 2000 DISSERTATION PROPOSAL A Software Framework for Collaborative Development of Structural Analysis Code Outline Motivations and Objectives (Why) Introduction: System Overview (What) On-line Element Services (How 1) Distributed Element Service Dynamic Shared Library Element Service On-line Data Access System (How 2) Summary: Next Step Workstations, Parallel Computers, Distributed Networked Workstations Element library CORE DEVELOPMENT MODEL (OpenSees) Library classes: ModelBuilder Domain classes Solver library Nonlinear strategies etc...
