* The Alzheimer‘s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog) is an 11 item scale assessing cognitive domains of memory, language, orientation, reasoning, and praxis. The scores range from 0 to 70 with lower scores indicating less impairment. This slide depicts the mean change in ADAS-cog (? SEM) score from baseline over 24 weeks of treatment with either memantine (20mg/day) or placebo.The data analysis is based on the observed cases (OC). Additionally the endpoint was also analyzed based on the intent-to-treat (ITT) population using the last observation carried forward (LOCF) method. Patients treated with memantine showed an improvement relative to baseline from week 4 to 18 (all p values ? 0.05), while patients receiving placebo exhibited progressive cognitive decline over the same study period. Significant benefit of memantine compared to placebo was observed at week 8 and was maintained to the study endpoint (LOCF analysis). The lack of statistical significance at week 24 for the ADAS-cog in the OC analysis could be due to attrition from the study of memantine-treated patients who were predominantly improving and of placebo-treated patients who were generally deteriorating.
