Analysis shows that both the style and technique of this you are typical of those in southern China during the Shang dynasty, particularly vindicated by the separate casting of the flanges on both lid and body. 15 pieces of such vessels have been scouted, which show technical homology. Except for the 3 pieces of gui with four ears, they were all cast in southern workshops during the Shang dynasty, covering a period from late Erligang culture to early Anyang period and no later than early Anyang period. During the time of Wu Ding, artisans in southern China were forced to move to Anyang, where they continued to cast, with the techniques of southern China, the gui with four ears as described in Xuanhe Bogutu (Catalogue of Bronzes in the Collection of Xuanhe Palace). Their descendents cast another two pieces of gui with four ears, which one has been collected in Freer Gallery of Art in USA, and the other was unearthed at Shigu mountain, Baoji city, Shaanxi province.
