The prevalence of specific allergy related diseases can be linked to age. Eczema, for example, is typically the first symptom in the youngest age group, followed by gastrointestinal symptoms (Ahlstedt, 1998). Young children may also experience recurrent otitis media as a result of eustachian tube dysfunction associated with food allergies (Nsouli, 1994). Sensitization to inhalant allergens occurs next, with marked increase in incidence and prevalence by age 3 (Ahlstedt, 1998), possibly leading to asthma. Many chronic asthmatics have a history of eczema and gastrointestinal distress during early childhood. Atopy Atopy can lead to atopic dermatitis, eczema, gastrointestinal distress and asthma. Eczema May be the first recognizable condition in what could be a long progression of allergy related or mediated diseases.
