Based o n t he met hod of multibody system , a t hree2dimensio nal finite segment dynamic model for cable systems is p resented in t his paper . This model co nsist s of a series of ball2and2socket rigid rods , which may have different p hysical p roperties and t he cable may have many open loop or closed loop branches. Effect s of fluid drag ,added mass and buoyance are included ,and co m2 pariso ns are made bet ween t he added mass and t he inertia of t he system it self . To validate t he p roposed model , t he small2scale cable dynamics is simulated. The modeling result s are co mpared wit h experimental result s of t he small2scale cable dynamics and t here has been much co nsistency. This model can be used in t he dynamic simulatio n of t he marine cable systems.
