Numerical Calculation and Experimental Study of Positive Onset Voltage of
Coated Conductors

ABSTRACT: Conductors are coated by room temperature
vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) or ice-phobic coating in
EHVDC/UHVDC power transmission lines. RTV coating is
used to repair the impact induced stretches of the conductor
surface and the ice-phobic coated conductors are employed on
the anti-icing of transmission lines. The onset voltage of the
coated conductors is higher than that of the clean conductors
and the corona discharge intensity of the coated conductor is
weakened. In order to analyze the positive onset voltage (POV)
of the coated conductor in the corona cage, firstly, the potential
gradient distribution of coated conductor was calculated in the
corona cage by charge simulation method. Then, based on the
classic positive onset criterion, the photoionization model
considering the effective radiation wavelength of POV was 0
presented to calculate the POV of the coated conductor. The
