4.2 Assonance(半谐音/元音韵/腰韵) Definition Assonance is the “echoing” or “resemblance” of vowel sounds in the stressed syllables of a sequence of words。 半谐音是指一组词、一句话或一行诗中同一重读元音重复出现,它具有音乐的节奏感,可增强语言的表现力。 E.g. Thou still unravished bride of quietness, Thou foster child of silence and slow time. (Keats: “Ode on a Grecian Urn”) 济慈《希腊古翁颂》? 你,未被劫掠的“恬静”的新娘, 你,“寂静”和“悠悠岁月”的养子. Read P152(2)(3)(4) In Chinese, we have similar device “叠韵” 惨淡,萧条,清明,山川 忽闻海上有仙山,山在虚无缥缈间。 但英语的Assonance押元韵的词可以相连或分开,汉语的叠韵则要求同韵母的词连在一起。 4.3 Homeoteleuton (尾韵/同韵脚/谐缀格) Definition: Words, phrases or clauses in close succession end with the same sounding suffix or syllables. E.g. Instead of rivets there came an invasion, an infliction, a visitation. Loyalty is seen largely as a relic of the 50s, replaced by a corporate Darwinism the leaves little room for commitment and none for sentiment. 4.4 Onomatopoeia(拟声法) Definition: This device makes use of imitation of sounds for effect. These sounds may be those made by a person, animal or thing, or associated with some action or movement. It is used to add vividness or vitality to description or narration. 通过模仿,描绘和渲染人类万物的声音来修辞的词格,运用它能刺激人们的听觉,产生语音象征意义的联想,耳闻其声, 身临其境的感觉。 拟声中多用名词、动词或副词。 The?car?rolled?bang?into?the?telegraph?pole.? 汽车砰的一声撞在电线杆上。? The?bullets?whizzed?over?his?head.? 子弹嗖嗖地飞过他的头顶。? Her?heart?went?pit-a-pat.? 她的心噗嗵噗嗵地跳。? E.g. 1. 唧唧复唧唧,木兰当户织。 2. crash(哗啦),clash(当啷),splash(扑通),croak(呱呱),yelp(汪汪) 3. The boiling water is “bubbling”. (水“咕嘟咕嘟”地开了。) 4. She was “wailing” for the lost child. (她为找不到孩子而“哇哇”大哭起来。) 5. The whip “cracked” as the wagon master started the horses. (马车夫赶马上路时, 鞭子甩得“劈啪劈啪”响。) 6. The young man let the drink “chug-a-lug” down his throat. (那位年轻人“咕嘟咕嘟”几口把饮料喝下了肚。) 7. When the story was over, children were “giggling” and then went away. (故事讲完后, 孩子们一个个“咯咯”大笑, 然后就走了。) 8.
